Laura Cereta was the widowed "sister" of Cardinal Rodrigo of Venice (she was actually his wife), and the daughter of the owner of one of the largest merchant fleets in the Venetian Republic.
She came to Rome ostensibly to claim her "brother"'s body when he was murdered by the Monster of Italy, but she came to negotiate a Crusade against the Ottomans currently invading Italy through Otranto.
